We can hardly believe that another term has flown by. Half way through 2018 already. Here’s what we’ve been up to in this second quarter:
Our recorder group are getting ready for Eisteddfod in August.
Choir at Hawkstone is improving steadily and getting ready for performances.
The kids at Thembelihle are enjoying their weekly violin and drumming lessons
Our saxophone girls are practicing for their grade 5 exams.
The brass band in Bruntville are still meeting weekly and making great progress.
Drumming workshops at the rural schools are, as always, so well received. The children love it and the “welcome” we get makes it all so worthwhile. (see photos to the left)
As most of our social media followers will know, the International Marimba and Steelpan Festival is at the end of July. Our marimba band has been practicing hard for this. Last year they were spectators, this year they are getting to compete. This trip to Gauteng is the absolute highlight of their year.
The band have had a few opportunities to perform already in 2018. The most recent was at the Howick Prep Music Festival on 25th April. Getting to play alongside the likes of Drakondale Choir School and the Pietermaritzburg Children’s Choir. They did us proud. (see photo below)
A couple of days before the festival in July we’ll be playing at the NCT Forestry Co-Operative Ltd AGM. NCT are one of our wonderful sponsors. They have made this marimba band possible by donating the marimbas in 2017. We look forward to showcasing the talent that they have helped cultivate.
Other high notes and important dates for your diary:
We are thrilled that Music Voyage has been provisionally approved as a beneficiary on the MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet programme. This is one of South Africa’s biggest fundraising programmes.
In order for us to continue with the registration process we need to send them fifty (50) signed and fully completed supporter application forms by August. If you haven’t done so yet, please contact us on admin@musicvoyage.co.za, we’ll send you the application form.

Jennifer Hindle is very generously arranging an open gardens event, with Music Voyage as the nominated charity, on the 27th and 28th October at St Andrew’s Retreat near Mooi River. We hope to get as many of our children there to perform.

We’re planning our end of year performance (already!) Save the date: Thursday 1st November 2018. We’ll have it at the Howick Agricultural Hall. The theme is Harmony, and we’re teaming up with our friends the Bugs (Midlands Meander Education Project) for a fun filled day where we celebrate our kids and their talent. Invites to follow.
